A school counselor is a well-respected person whose job is one of high demand. A counselor needs to possess the right qualities and adaptability to do well.

A school counselor has an important role to provide guidance to students in a variety of the aspects of life. Often a well respected position, a counselor should possess good qualities for working with kids. He needs to be someone students can feel comfortable talking to, someone who takes the time to understand them, and respect them as a person.

A school counselor is responsible for the psychological development of the students, particularly that of future planning, mediation, guidance, and counseling. He can help students plan their future and field of study. Even in grade school, a counselor is preparing kids for academic success now and throughout their school years. A counselor is at times a mediator when kids have behavioral issues and need to solve a situation. He can help them overcome other problems and make decisions. Additionally he can also give guidance and encourage students to do their best. Following are some tips on how to be an effective school counselor.

Maintain Good Health

As commonly is said, you must first take care of yourself to be able to care for others. This is definitely true for a school counselor. He will not be able to have the stamina to get through all of his tasks unless he first takes care of himself. He needs to find a balance between personal life and work life and manage stress. If he gets a good nights rest and a healthy breakfast he will be a lot more alert and ready to solve situations that present themselves than someone that stayed up late and skipped breakfast.

Be a Good Listener

One of the most important ways to be an effective school counselor is listening. A counselor that is willing to listen to a student and try to understand what she is saying will teach a student that she is important. He uses eye contact and avoids other distractions, validates what the student says, gives advice when asked, and is someone she can confide in.

Be Flexible

The job of a school counselor is naturally going to need flexibility. When a counselor's expertise is needed to deal with a problem he needs to be available, often on the spot. An effective counselor will help the student feel like their needs are most important. When several situations present themselves at once, a counselor should be able to figure out how to balance it all to get things accomplished.

Build Relationships

A good school counselor will have the ability to build a relationship with the students and others in the workplace. He should be someone a student can open up to and not feel she is being judged. The counselor should speak in a friendly manner and be encouraging and helpful when the student needs guidance. He needs to be devoted to his job and be genuine in caring about the student's concerns.

Foster Self-worth

When a student needs to be uplifted and feel like make a difference, a school counselor can offer encouragement. He can remind them of their good qualities and encourage them to be themselves. If they are struggling with the criticism of classmates, a counselor can help them to realize they don't need to worry what others think of them. Additionally he can give them the confidence and motivation to work hard and succeed in their school work.
